A message from the President...

From the President

We have a big year ahead of us.

Rules have changed with regard to general membership. To qualify, if you are not published, you must submit to RWA a completed 20,000 word novella. Make it a goal if you haven't met the requirement. I'd suggest joining in on NaNoWriMo, a great way to reach at least 20,000 words or more.

Lori compiled a list of the answers members gave for meetings and I'll ask her to present them. Traci Morganfield is working on them.

Congratulations are in order for our membership with approximately eighty-four percent published.  For pre-published authors, you have a wealth of resource information by talking to the published authors. In 2016, I hope we'll see one hundred percent published.

Membership VP Claudia Burgoa has some excellent plans to increase our membership.

With Dawn Annis to keep us in line with our goals and Cheri Merz to keep us within our budget, we should have a great year.

Welcome to everyone.

Together, We Can!

Most Sincerely,

Mary Hagen
2016 President, Colorado Romance Writers

January 9, 2016 meeting.

At our meeting on January 9, 2016 we have a number of topics to discuss brought out on emails sent by members.  Put on your thinking caps and add to the discussions about separating published and unpublished author meetings.  Keep in mind most of our members are published. Several members are interested in cross-promotion.  We need to discuss the PAL LOOP, and Lizzie Sue's mention of Amazon and Smash words preorder Schedule Release.  At our board meeting the question came up about…

New President

I'm new at this job and realize I have an awesome group of previous presidents to follow.  It's daunting to think of reaching their standards and accomplishments, but I have an active board and with them I'll do better than I thought. Hope I'll see you at our January meeting.  Our program VP is working hard to give us the best programs possible.  Our new VP of membership hopes to increase our numbers and bring current members to the meetings.  The new secretary is working on programs to help…

Author! Author!

It's the most rejection-heavy time of the year!

Did you hear that long, low howl of despair in the early working hours this morning, campers? Did its mournful resonance chill your bones, or at least lightly chill your marrow? Did it prompt you to yank the covers over your head, reasoning that whether that terrible noise came from the wind or the collective resultants of holiday merry-makers returning to work, you wanted no part of it? If you're a writer, I hope you obeyed that instinct, at least so far as acting upon that New ...

Resolving well, part II: straining with the logical sieve

Ready to rejoin the real world again? Excellent. Startlingly often, aspiring writers just presume that a request for pages, particularly in response to a conference pitch, constitutes a pro's commitment to cease all work activity the moment those pages show up. Never mind that over half of requested materials never do show up -- possibly because the writers in question queried or pitched before the book was done, or are trying to work up nerve to submit, or are waiting for the next new ...

Resolving well, part III: okay, what should I do instead?

If you must take steps toward representation within the next few days or weeks, may I suggest something else that might improve your query's chances? Invest the time in narrowing your querying list to agents with a solid, recent track record of selling books like yours. Why will that help at the querying stage? Well, performing that research is relatively rare; a staggering number of queries arrive on the desks of people who have never represented a similar book in their professional ...

Resolving well, part IV: but wait -- there's hope!

Got your thinking cap firmly in place? Let's get right back to some hard considering: working her way through that day's correspondence is necessary to clear Millicent's schedule, or even enable her to see her desk again. As January progresses, each day will bring still more for her to read. Not every New Year's resolution gets implemented at the same pace, after all, nor do they have the same content. This month, however, Millicent may be sure that each fresh morning will provide ...

"Why aren't you published yet?" and other light holiday banter

While lazily re-reading the letters of Madame de Sévigné, as one so often does at this time of year, I stumbled across a particularly revealing review of a book released several centuries ago. Quoth the great lady: This Morale of Nicole is admirable, and Cléopatre is going along nicely, but in no hurry; it is for odd moments. Usually, it is reading this that lulls me to sleep -- the large print pleases me much more than the style. "Good gravy!" I exclaimed. "Aspiring writers across this ...
