A message from the President...

Happy Spring!

Welcome to Colorado Romance Writer's website. With spring upon us, many writers decide, "I'm going to:"

  • Join a writing group.
  • Finish my manuscript.
  • Find an agent.
  • Self-publish my novel.
  • Set up a website.
  • Get on social media.

Colorado Romance Writers is filled with writers just like you.

Some of our members are beginners just starting out. We have more experienced writers that are primed for publication. We also have as members that have just signed their first publication contract, and some that have four or five (or more!) published novels under their shiny, jewel-encrusted belts.

Talk about diversity! We are truly fortuitous to have such a wealth of knowledge and experience among our members.

On the second Saturday of each month we gather to enjoy the company of other romance authors. We share our conquests and our rejections. We share the latest industry news and offer advise and guidance on making it as a romance author.

To quench our desire to learn, CRW members enjoy quality monthly programs to work on our craft. From running a book business, to getting to the heart of your characters, and how to pen a spectacular start to your novel, CRW's monthly programs help you learn how to write the best book you can and be the best writer you can be.

CRW also hosts a series of Online Workshops every month. These workshops are available to anyone, anywhere in the world. As long as you have an internet connection, you can learn something on the craft of writing. The best news is - CRW members get a nice discount on their class registration.

In 2015, we're also offering two Mini-conferences, one in May and another in August. These exceptional all-day program workshops will allow you to further hone your craft with some of the best industry experts. Liz Pelletier of Entangled Publishing is on tap for May, and Angela James with Carina Press is sharing her knowledge with us in August.

To celebrate romance novels, CRW runs the prestigious the Award of Excellence contest for published novels. This year, we're introducing our CRW Excellence Award - a special award to be given to the one CRW member who's novel (or novella) is rated best in the contest.

But CRW is not all about business and learning. We know how to play, too. From our weekend writing retreat, to our anniversary party/romance lovers tea, and our holiday potluck, we pull out all the stops to enjoy spending time with fellow romance novelists.

We have a motto:

Together, We Can!

And we do.

Take a look around our website and see what CRW is up to this week! Better yet, for those that haven't already, join us and become that writer you always wanted to be!

Most Sincerely,

Lori Corsentino

We've all dun it. Missspeled a word, or three. Forgot word in a sentence. Sliced and diced grammar rules. Even looked at a typo and faiiled to see it. For all of us, here some guidelines.

  1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.
  2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
  3. And don't start a sentence with a…

Have You Met The CRW Website?

Hi Everyone!

The fact that CRW members don't interact much on our website was recently mentioned to me. That's true. We're pretty quiet in here. But we don't need to be. This website has many capabilities that are underutilized and even some that aren't utilized at all.

To help change that - I decided to do a series of blog posts to introduce you all to the capabilities of our website. Also, I had the idea to start up some new groups, resurrect some existing groups, and get…

Our 2013 AOE finalists will be announced at the Saturday, April 13th meeting! We're really excited to share this year's finalists, and may have a VERY pleasant surprise for a CRW member or two who entered the contest.

Hopefully everyone can be there. We've got a great program with Courtney Milan, and book reading from a new author. So it proves to be a great day!

Speaking for my fellow Coordinators Aimee, Tiffany, and Jen, I say we all hope to see you…

Author! Author!

It's the most rejection-heavy time of the year!

Did you hear that long, low howl of despair in the early working hours this morning, campers? Did its mournful resonance chill your bones, or at least lightly chill your marrow? Did it prompt you to yank the covers over your head, reasoning that whether that terrible noise came from the wind or the collective resultants of holiday merry-makers returning to work, you wanted no part of it? If you're a writer, I hope you obeyed that instinct, at least so far as acting upon that New ...

Resolving well, part II: straining with the logical sieve

Ready to rejoin the real world again? Excellent. Startlingly often, aspiring writers just presume that a request for pages, particularly in response to a conference pitch, constitutes a pro's commitment to cease all work activity the moment those pages show up. Never mind that over half of requested materials never do show up -- possibly because the writers in question queried or pitched before the book was done, or are trying to work up nerve to submit, or are waiting for the next new ...

Resolving well, part III: okay, what should I do instead?

If you must take steps toward representation within the next few days or weeks, may I suggest something else that might improve your query's chances? Invest the time in narrowing your querying list to agents with a solid, recent track record of selling books like yours. Why will that help at the querying stage? Well, performing that research is relatively rare; a staggering number of queries arrive on the desks of people who have never represented a similar book in their professional ...

Resolving well, part IV: but wait -- there's hope!

Got your thinking cap firmly in place? Let's get right back to some hard considering: working her way through that day's correspondence is necessary to clear Millicent's schedule, or even enable her to see her desk again. As January progresses, each day will bring still more for her to read. Not every New Year's resolution gets implemented at the same pace, after all, nor do they have the same content. This month, however, Millicent may be sure that each fresh morning will provide ...

"Why aren't you published yet?" and other light holiday banter

While lazily re-reading the letters of Madame de Sévigné, as one so often does at this time of year, I stumbled across a particularly revealing review of a book released several centuries ago. Quoth the great lady: This Morale of Nicole is admirable, and Cléopatre is going along nicely, but in no hurry; it is for odd moments. Usually, it is reading this that lulls me to sleep -- the large print pleases me much more than the style. "Good gravy!" I exclaimed. "Aspiring writers across this ...
