A message from the President...

Hello Fellow Writer,

Welcome to the official website of the Colorado Romance Writers (CRW), an affiliate of Romance Writers of America!  We hope you will join us in becoming a stronger, supportive community.

At CRW, we are dedicated to promoting the careers of both pre-published and published
romance authors.  We have a meeting every month where we have a speaker to discuss topics such as craft, industry, research and marketing.  A luncheon is provided.  The best part is socializing with each other and celebrating our cheers and consoling our tears.

The first half of the year, we have an exciting line up of speakers beginning with our own Ashley March in January on plotting, Diane Whiddon in February on promotions, Danica Favorite-McDonald on Taxes in March and Lia Slater on Writing Sex Scenes in April.  In May, CRW will be joining the Heart of Denver Chapter to host a conference with Angela James, editor from Carina Press.

This is just the first half of the year.  Wait, until you see the second half!  We have Kim Killion, and Brooks Johnson coming to Denver in August.  Kim is a talented author and is owner of Hot Damn Designs and Brooks is one of her male models.

We offer critique groups for members interested in them. I, myself, belong to one of them and find my group invaluable.  We have an on-line Yahoo Loop for all members to use for announcements.  We have a Book Buzz program whereby members use Twitter and Facebook to create and generate to celebrate member’s new releases.

CRW runs two prestigious contests – Heart of the Rockies (unpublished authors) and Award of Excellence (published authors).  We’ve had numerous winners from HOTR receive full submissions from editors and agents.  Contests are excellent way to receive feedback and promote your work.

For our published romance authors, we have a growing and enthusiastic PAL group where members can seek advice and support one another on a Yahoo Loop.  In October, we celebrate romance authors and readers with a Tea featuring our published authors and honoring our readers.  We have tea, coffee, sandwiches and dessert.  We hope to see you there.

CRW has so much to offer and we hope you join us!  Remember together we can.

Mary Guida, 2012 President

Published Author Blogging

Hi everyone,

I'm blogging at www.karendocter.com/blog/ and currently changing things up a bit!

As many of you know, I run a Karen's Killer Fixin's feature on Fridays, where I post some of my favorite recipes. You know how I love to cook! Been collecting recipes for years. Anyway, I've recently instituted a special feature on Fridays called Karen's Killer Fixin's: *Author Special* where, in lieu of my own recipe, I highlight an…

Countdown to a contest entry, part XI: the emperor of ice cream

Okay, you caught me: that's not ice cream; it's tiramisù. What do you want from me? The ice cream truck does not start circulating my neighborhood until summer starts. But enough frivolity: I'm worried about your recovery from yesterday's magnum opus on contest entry formatting. Surprisingly stressful, isn't it, to go over contest rules that closely? That never palls, for some reason; I judge contests, and I still found writing last night's post a trifle nerve-wracking. Why, other than my ...

Contest countdown, part 11a: identify yourself! Or not.

Already, I hear dissension in the ranks. "But Anne," I hear those of you planning to enter next year's version of the ULC, "I realize that the contest you were discussing yesterday did require a title page, but if I'm reading the rules correctly, the contest I'm entering doesn't ask for one. I'm afraid of breaking the rules -- do I really need to add it?" I understand your fear, cringing pre-entrants, but in my opinion, yes, you do need one, for precisely the same reason that a ...

Contest countdown, part 11b: more ice cream, please, emperor!

That's why, in case you have been wondering, I harp on standard format so much here. No one is born aware of how the industry expects to see writing presented, but the rules are seldom shared with those new to the game -- and almost never explained in much detail. Certainly not on your garden-variety contest entry guideline page. Admittedly, sometimes one sees the rules asserted in an aggressive do this or fail! tone, but it's pretty difficult to apply a rule unless you know what it's for ...

Contest countdown, part 10a: dotting those Is

Eyes a bit happier? Good. Grab a pen and paper, please, and go back through the Manuscript Requirements, making two lists: a to-do list for pulling together your entry, and an eligibility requirement list. Yes, yes, I know: it's a tedious exercise, and this particular contest, like most, had a separate general statement about eligibility. What I'm talking about here are the specific entry requirements, not the disclaimers. Besides, but wouldn't you rather do this for the first time when ...

Contest countdown, part 10b: oh, boy! Another checklist!

"But wait!" some of you shout, and with good reason. "I notice there's nothing here about whether I can enter the same piece of writing in multiple years of the same contest. What if I placed in Novel-in-Progress last year -- could I enter it again this year, since it's still in progress?" Excellent question, repeat entrant-wannabes. I had to wander all the way down to the bottom of an exceedingly well-stuffed webpage to find the answer to that one: "Winners in one competition year will ...
